This information on sleep apnea device offering dental treatment without CPAP was created in our NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring office. At The Center for Special Dentistry® we have two specialists who provide NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring treatment. Usually their academic interests differ. However they both offer treatment for sleep apnea and snoring.
One is a dental oncologist who focuses on treating head and neck cancer patients who can have very complex breathing problems. These skills benefit non-cancer Sleep Apnea and Snoring patients as well. Next our orthodontist’s honors thesis at Harvard Dental was on treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Singularly these two specialists are backed by a large team of 14 other dentists and specialists in one midtown location. This uniquely allows interdisciplinary consultations.
A Sleep Apnea device or appliance has several different names
Ordinarily these different names all typically mean the same thing.
A Sleep Apnea device or appliance has several different names that all typically mean the same thing. It is used to treat sleep apnea in people who do not want to wear a CPAP at night. A Mandibular Advancement Device MAD, also referred to as an OAT for Occlusal Appliance Therapy is used to bring the lower jaw, or mandible, forward during sleep; this opens the airway in the back of the throat.
A sleep medicine physician must first perform a sleep study before making this appliance. The patient will have the test results emailed to our office for our analysis.
We make molds of the patient’s teeth to fabricate the sleep apnea device
We deliver the device at a subsequent visit. The patient will then have a period of several weeks to habituate to the appliance and return for needed adjustments.
