At The Center for Special Dentistry® we have two specialists who provide NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring treatment. Singularly their academic interests are varied. One is a dental oncologist who focuses on treating head and neck cancer patients. Particularly head and neck cancer patients can have very complex problems with breathing. Therefore a dental oncologist has significant skills to treat Sleep Apnea and Snoring problems in non-cancer patients as well. Separately our orthodontist’s honors thesis at Harvard Dental was on treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Next these two specialists are backed by a large team of 14 other dentists and specialists in one midtown location. This uniquely allows interdisciplinary consultations.
Our NYC Sleep Apnea and Snoring Treatment can help you get a good night rest. Our dental appliances for sleep apnea snoring are comfortable. We use top labs.
Replace your CPAP with a simple dental device
We have experience with many types of oral sleep devices that may replace a CPAP. We all know that snoring can be very disruptive. However snoring can be a sign of other more serious sleep disorders like sleep apnea which can be a silent killer.
- Zzzz. Good morning! I was asked if I would write a review and jumped at the opportunity. My husband and I have been patients of Jeff for maybe 25 years. Our NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring patients also have access to top medical care
Moreover our patients have access to our affiliated team of 12 medical doctors in our building. This is because of the known relationship between dental disease and other medical diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Again this uniquely allows interdisciplinary consultations.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common sleep disorder
Sleep apnea affects tens of millions of Americans. Interrupted breathing during sleep is a sign of OSA. Hence oxygen delivery to the lungs is insufficient. An increased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and arrhythmias can occur from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can cause memory loss and decreased sizes of certain brain structures as seen in MRI-based studies.
Special training in sleep medicine
The dental specialists at The Center for Special Dentistry® have special training in sleep medicine and play a vital role in the treatment of both snoring and sleep apnea. They are skilled to work closely with sleep physicians to diagnose and properly treat these conditions. Each patient visit is scheduled with extra time to offer the finest in personalized care. The group effort is first class and the fees are correspondingly high-end.
Occlusal Appliance Therapy, or OAT
Typically, patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea receive Occlusal Appliance Therapy, or OAT. In comparison those with severe sleep apnea rely on heavier, bulkier face-mask devices called CPAP or Continuous Airway Positive Pressure. Unfortunately, these large devices can severely affect the quality of life of users and their partners and family members. In addition, some patients undergo throat surgery (i.e., UPPP – uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) to help alleviate symptoms. Many patients prefer that doctors offer conservative options such as OAT. In contrast patients prefer to avoid surgery or having to wear a CPAP face-mask.

Descriptive names of sleep apnea and snoring devices
A NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring device or appliance has several different names that all typically mean the same thing. People who do not want to wear a CPAP at night should consider a dental device. A Mandibular Advancement Device MAD and Occlusal Appliance Therapy OAT may be considered the same thing. The lower jaw, or mandible, is moved forward during sleep. This opens the airway in the back of the throat.
Singular role of a sleep medicine physician
Screening for sleep disorders is important for all patients. Sleep disorders include sleep apnea, snoring, narcolepsy, insomnia, and chronic fatigue.
A sleep medicine physician must first perform a sleep study before making this appliance. The patient will have the test results emailed to our office for our analysis. In our office we make molds of the patient’s teeth to fabricate the appliance and deliver it at a subsequent visit. The patient will then have a period of several weeks to habituate to the appliance and return for needed adjustments. Then the sleep medicine physician will see the patient again. This next sleep study is performed to see if the sleep apnea has been reduced with this dental device. The sleep physician will then confirm it would be safe to discontinue the use of the CPAP.

Sleep related problems
Sleep-related problems go beyond the individual patient. Undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders are dangerous to health. They are also a burden on society. Excessive daytime sleepiness significantly reduces workplace productivity. In addition motor vehicle accidents commonly involve drowsy drivers.
70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders. That number includes obstructive sleep apnea, daytime sleepiness, and snoring. That’s 1 in 5 Americans! In addition, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that 12 million Americans today have obstructive sleep apnea. However this is considered a conservative estimate. The NIH recognizes that many cases of sleep apnea are unreported. Many people either do not report the condition or do not know they have the disease.
Our sleep specialists hold advanced degrees
Our NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring treatment specialists include two oral and maxillofacial surgeons and one dental oncologist. The latter holds an additional academic subspecialty degree in Dental Oncology. He treats head and neck cancer patients. Some of these patient have had parts of their face and/or neck surgically removed because of cancer.
Head and neck cancer patients may have highly complex Sleep Apnea and Snoring problems related to their cancer treatment. Our specialists bring this background to also help our patients who don’t have cancer with their NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring Treatment needs.
Our dental sleep medicine specialists can custom design and deliver oral appliance therapy OAT after a diagnosis is made by a sleep physician. An OAT is a proven treatment option for those with sleep apnea. For example, a mandibular advancement device MAD can be calibrated to a certain distance. Thereby this creates an ideal airway opening for a patient with snoring or OSA. Other devices can stabilize the jaw and tongue, as well as increasing the muscle tone of facial structures.
With oral appliance therapy, our NYC Sleep Apnea Snoring Treatment specialist can alleviate or eliminate the many symptoms associated with snoring and sleep apnea. If you or a loved one has questions regarding NYC sleep apnea, snoring, daytime drowsiness, or any other sleep disorder, please consult the dental sleep medicine experts at The Center for Special Dentistry®.
