COVID-19. A Review on the Safety of Using Povidone-Iodine in the Nose & Mouth Against Coronavirus

July 21, 2020 8:52 pm Published by

A new paper* on Povidone-Iodine (“PVP-I”) safety was written by a group lead by UConn otolaryngologist, Samantha Frank, MD. It suggests that PVP-I can be safely used for up to five months in the nose (up to 1.25%) and mouth (up to 2.5%).

In addition, in vitro studies do not show damage to related mucosal tissue at these concentrations. Adverse reactions are rare and chronic use does not appear to cause clinical thyroid disease.

This author has already discussed in detailed prior posts the general scientific expectation that 0.5% PVP-I will kill COVID-19 in the human nose & mouth when properly used as directed. Randomized clinical trials may soon provide new insight. This paper adds to a growing body of work that suggests 0.5% PVP-I may be a safe & effective antiviral antiseptic gargle & nasal spray (“AAG&NS”) to help prevent inoculation or transmission of COVID-19.

The CDC offers no guidance so no claim is made. However it is generally supported in academia & the US Army. Consult your doctor before use in healthy adults.
