Gum Disease Treatment

The Center for Special Dentistry® (CSD) has performed Oral Microbiology Culture testing on periodontal gum disease patients, and has referred them for medical examinations when appropriate, for over two decades.  This was long before the relationship between gum disease and heart disease or diabetes hit mainstream media.  CSD offers intelligent dentistry; oral health is important for your entire body.

Periodontics (Gum Therapy) treats bad breath, swollen and/or bleeding gums and a bad taste in the mouth that is caused by bacterial infection.  Our staff Periodontist is the dental specialist who typically treats gum disease in concert with our dental hygienists.  At CSD your gum therapy will be coordinated with all other needed dentistry at the same time.  We carefully personalize your Periodontal treatment plan so that, for example, your Cosmetic Dentistry occurs in the appropriate sequence, after Endodontics and Periodontics.

The skills of individual dental hygienists vary as greatly as those of dentists.  High volume offices will typically schedule patients in 20 - 30 minute time slots whereas CSD will typically schedule hygiene patients for one hour.  There is a reason our teeth cleaning visits are more expensive.  If bacteria is left behind after a poorly performed cleaning then the ravages of tooth decay and gum disease may progress unnoticed by the naked eye for many years - until the damage is done.

At CSD a combination of early gum disease diagnosis, early preventive therapy and bacterial cultures with species-specific antibiotic regimens should dramatically reduce the need for gum surgery.  CSD is relatively rare in providing this Oral Microbiology Testing but the reader will agree it is logical after a review of the literature on the National Institute of Health's U.S. Government website (www.NIH.gov).  The results we obtain using conservative methods are quite significant and therefore our need for severe gum surgery is dramatically reduced.
