Image Photo Description
Dental implant complication problems, gum infection, culture, bacteria, pain Gum infection around twenty year old dental implants in a patient who had not visited a dentist for over 6 years. The clasp of the dental implant denture had broken causing the denture to rub against the dental implants and gums in the presence of calculus (white, hardened plaque). These images were taken after Antibiotic & Initial Periodontal Therapy were completed. The Oral Microbiology Culture showed 32% Enteric Gram Negative Rods (5% is normal) that were resistant to Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, Metronidazole & Clindamycin. Antibiotic Resistance testing revealed this infection would respond to Ciprofloxacin. These pictures were rotated to show the view from the tongue side.
dental implants problems complications, tooth implant prosthodontics, telescopic coping implantology Complications problems with dental implants. Retrofitting a new telescopic coping under a porcelain-metal teeth bridge that is supported by dental implants and teeth. Read Yalisove & Dietz's classic textbook on telescopic prosthetic dentistry.
dental implants complications problems, tooth implant, porcelain dental crown cap aesthetics Complications problems with dental implants. The initial dental implant abutment extends too far labially for ideal porcelain dental crown aesthetics. After the preparation - drilling with copious water irrigation, there is now enough room for the ideal porcelain thickness on the dental crown. The screw hole in tooth implant is used to enhance the tooth crown retention. The post fabricated within the metal coping is used to enhance crown retention.
dental Implants tooth implant, oral surgery, second stage, uncovering implant abutments Second stage dental implant oral surgery. Uncovering the first stage implant abutments. The text in the image says: Second stage implant surgery. Uncovering abutments. #8 and #9 implants shown. #6 and #11 implants will also be uncovered. Note that the teeth #'s 7 and 10 were left in the otherwise edentulous maxilla to help retain a temporary prosthesis while four implants healed. These teeth will now be extracted, and implants placed and allowed to heal. A new temp is made. This sequence always kept the patient with a fixed temporary.
dental implants complications problems, tooth implant, loose dental crowns caps mobility moving How to Pictures - Tightening a loose second stage dental implant screw through a dental crown cemented on a single tooth implant. The crown was loose but the implant itself was loose. You need to differentiate this in advance. Use copious water irrigation with an air-water syringe in addition to handpiece water. 1) Prepare - drill - through occlusal surface of the porcelain into metal substructure of the dental crown. 2) Prep through metal to expose the tiny cotton pellet - we use blue wax - which overlays the slot in the second stage screw. (Place the blue wax before dental crown cementation to prevent the dental cement from filling the dental implant second stage screw slot which would prevent being able to ever turn the screw again). 3) Access through porcelain crown shows second stage screw. 4) The dental implant screwdriver is in place tightening the screw. Close this access opening with blue wax and then composite resin tooth bonding in the occlusal surface. You could consider designing dental crowns for single tooth dental implants with the access already prepared directly to the second stage screw. This would make getting to the screw much easier should the need arise. You may need to identify the brand of dental implant - using dental x-rays or by asking the patient or prior dentist - in advance of this procedure to be sure you have the instruments to fit this specific brand of dental implant. When placing second stage dental implants ALWAYS torque the second stage screw to the manufacturer's specification using the manufacturer's torque driver. This will help avoid the dental implants complications problems discussed here.
dental implants problems complications, tooth implant, loose screws dental crowns off caps mobility How to Pictures - Gaining access to a loose second stage dental implant second stage screw through a dental crown cemented on a single tooth implant. The dental crown was loose but the implant itself was solid. You need to differentiate this in advance. Use copious water irrigation with an air-water syringe in addition to handpiece water. 1) Drill through the occlusal porcelain into metal. 2) and 3) Prepare through the metal to expose the thin dental cement layer between crown and dental implant abutment. 4) Access through the dental crown shows second stage screw covered by cotton pellet. We prefer to cover this screw instead with blue wax since a cotton pellet will absorb saliva over time but the wax will not. Close this access opening with blue wax and then tooth bonding in the occlusal surface. You could consider designing dental crowns for single tooth implants with the access already prepared directly over the second stage screw. This would make getting to the screw much easier should the need arise. You may need to identify the brand of dental implant - using dental x-rays or by asking the patient or prior dentist - in advance of this procedure to be sure you have the instruments to fit this specific brand of dental implant. When placing second stage dental implants ALWAYS torque the second stage screw to the manufacturer's specification using the manufacturer's torque driver.
problems dental implants, artificial tooth root complications failure prosthetics site placement Where not to place dental implants. The surgical placement of a dental implant depends on the quantity and quality of the local bone. The location of this tooth implant rendered it non-restorable. It was removed and a three-unit porcelain metal dental bridge was placed. To help avoid complications problems with dental implants consider using a surgical stent to see if the pre-operative available bone will allow a reasonable cosmetic result when the dental crown is placed.
problems dental implants complications, acrylic tooth failure, prosthetics implant denture hybrids Acrylic failure in an acrylic fused to metal full arch dental implant bridge prosthesis. Before and after pictures of repair to an eight year old fixed removable dental implant bridge. 1) The acrylic separated from the metal of this eight-year-old dental implant prosthesis. 2) The dental implant abutments are shown following removal of the prosthesis. 3) The implant prosthesis showing the separation. 4) Following fabrication of new acrylic to the frame. The ability to remove, repair and replace a dental implant denture hybrid prosthesis is a good thing. Complications problems with dental implants are usually much easier to resolve with fixed removable prostheses.
Microbiology Culture, Fistula, Dental Implants Problems, Subperiosteal Implant, Abscess, X-ray An oral microbiology culture taken from a draining fistula - gum boil - around a maxillary unilateral subperiosteal dental implant. Bacterial cultures should be taken before prescribing antibiotics. This infection was resistant to Penicillin, Tetracycline and Metronidazole. This dental implant infection was successfully treated. The patient successfully maintained these dental implants for 20 years until her death at age 86 in 2009. Review the Microbiology section in the left margin to learn more about how to apply these concepts to complications problems with dental implants.

 Information about these dental photos

In medicine and dentistry "left" and "right" are based upon the orientation of the patient's body and not how they appear in a photograph of a smile.  For example, a reference to the upper left teeth will actually appear to be on the right side when viewing a picture of the face and similarly an upper right tooth will appear to be on the left side.

Many words in dentistry like oral and mouth have a similar meaning and are frequently used together to help our readers find specific words they best understand.  This is particularly important because a majority of our visitors are from countries where English is not their primary language.  Maxilla or maxillary refer to the upper jaw.  Mandible or mandibular refer to the lower jaw.

There are many other similar word combinations used throughout this website because our pages are read by patients and dentists.  A few of the most common are discussed here.  Tooth decay, tooth cavity and dental caries all mean the same thing.  Tooth, teeth and dental are also frequently interchanged as in teeth veneers or dental veneer laminate.  Oral rehabilitation and dental reconstruction mean smile makeover.  The word for x-ray may be used with or without a hyphen (this is true for other words too) and can also be called a radiograph.
